Microsoft Sign Up for Students

Whether you’re using Microsoft Word for essays, PowerPoint for class presentations, or OneDrive to store your files, you’ll need a Microsoft account.

The good news? Creating one is quick, easy, and free.

If you’re more of an iOS student, sign up for an Apple student account instead.

Let’s go through the steps together!

1. What You Need to Get Started

Before signing up, make sure you have:

  • A valid email address (school email works too)
  • A password you want to use
  • A phone number for verification

That’s all you need!

2. Go to the Microsoft Sign-Up Page

Open your browser and go to signup.live.com.
This is Microsoft’s official account creation page.

Click “Create one!” to begin.

3. Choose Your Email Option

You can sign up with:

  • Your existing email (like Gmail or your school email), or
  • A new Outlook.com email provided by Microsoft

If you want everything in one place, choosing an Outlook email is a good idea—but using your current email works perfectly too.

4. Create a Password

Enter a strong password.
Try using a mix of:

  • Capital letters
  • Numbers
  • Symbols

Make sure it’s something you can remember but hard for others to guess.

Click Next.

5. Enter Your Name

Type in your first and last name.
Microsoft uses this for personalization across its apps.

6. Add Your Region and Birthday

Select your:

  • Country/Region
  • Date of birth

This helps Microsoft tailor the account experience and keep it secure.

7. Verify Your Email

Microsoft will send a verification code to your email.
Check your inbox, copy the code, and enter it on the sign-up screen.

8. Verify Your Phone Number

You’ll be asked for a phone number next.
Microsoft uses this for account recovery and security.

Choose whether you want to receive:

  • A text message, or
  • A phone call

Enter the code you receive.

9. All Done — Start Using Your Account!

Once everything is verified, your Microsoft account is ready to use.

With it, you can access:

  • Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint (online versions are free!)
  • OneDrive for storing files
  • Microsoft Teams, often used in schools
  • Outlook email
  • Xbox services (if you’re a gamer!)

Student Tips

  • Check if your school gives Microsoft 365 for free.
Many schools offer full access to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and more at no cost.
  • Use OneDrive for schoolwork.
It automatically saves your files and keeps them synced across devices.
  • Keep your password safe.
It’s important for accessing all your Microsoft services.
